  2. soldier, leader of Amal (`Hope'), the
  3. Syrian-backed Shi'ite nationalist movement.
  4. He was minister of justice in the government
  5. of President Gemayel from 1984. In 1988 Amal
  6. was disbanded after defeat by the
  7. Iranian-backed Hezbollah (`Children of God')
  8. during the Lebanese civil wars, and Berri
  9. joined the cabinet of Selim Hoss in 1989.
